Journal Entry #1: March 9, 1500 (We set sail.)

Today, we departed from the shallow harbors of Lisbon, Portugal. The fleet left the shallow harbors of Lisbon, Portugal with full intent of traveling to India in search of profitable trade. Furthermore, a few missionaries purchased passage on our voyage and will be deposited into India to spread the teachings of Roman Catholicism to the peoples of that land. I command with me a fleet sizing 1200 men and thirteen fair ships.
This voyage has a hefty debt to pay to our own lands and therefore we must be successful. While I doubt the hardiness of a few men, the rest are seaworthy beyond their years. Hopefully, we will be able to repay the loans of the wealthy florence bankers and merchants whom funded this expedition. While seafaring may be my job, this voyage was undertaken for many alterior reasons. Such as nationalism for Portugal and the sense of exploring that which few have explored before. The riches of the east are ripe for the taking of my crew and that of all of Portugal.
